About Dom
Hi I'm Dom. I achieved a high 1st class in a Mathematics MSci at Imperial College London and am now in my first year of a Quantum Machine Learning PhD. I have over 4 years of maths tutoring experience, ranging from KS3 to Further Maths at A level and preparation for university entrance exams (such as MAT and STEP). Almost all of my previous students have either achieved or surpassed their target grades, so feel free to have a look at my reviews.
I achieved straight A*s at both GCSE and A level. I aim to teach the same mathematical concepts, exam technique and learning strategies that have worked for me in the past to consistently achieve these high grades. I think that anyone can achieve these same grades with 1-1 tuition and enough work. I have often found that the methods taught in schools often prioritise repetition over actual understanding. So in my lessons, I try to emphasise why a particular method works. I have found through experience that this not only makes the concepts easier to remember, but also better prepares students to tackle the harder questions that are needed to get the top grades.
My tutoring is especially effective when it comes to preparing for the MAT and STEP papers. I had to sit both of these exams when applying for university and whilst I scored highly, they are some of the hardest exams I have ever sat. These papers require very strong problem solving abilities, different exam techniques and sometimes even knowledge beyond the A level syllabus.
About my sessions
There are several key principles that I base my teaching style on. The first of which is to always work at the student's pace, this is their time not mine. By this I mean, the student is encouraged to interrupt me at any time if they have a question or to stop me if I am moving too fast. Mathematics is a subject in which any topic always has several prerequisites, and so I ensure that we do not move on until all prerequisites are mastered. I also prioritise the importance of practise questions in my lessons. Instead of just reading out examples to a student and then setting homework I try to make the focus on what they can do, if they get stuck then I give them a hint but I always try not to give the whole question away. This way, a pupil has always worked towards the answer themselves and I find that this teaches understanding rather than rote memorisation. This style also allows me to effectively pick up on gaps in the student's knowledge so that it can be effectively targeted through custom homework and future lessons.
For MAT/STEP preparation I like to use a bank of customised practise questions that are not available online. These are specifically designed to span the jump in understanding from A level to MAT/STEP. Several of the past paper questions available are initially too hard for an A level student and so I find it beneficial to slowly build up to these, with the aim that by the end of our sessions the student can do every past paper question.
